Catholic schools deem RH bill as 'moral threat'
Various school administration heads, members of the faculty of Iloilo City's private Catholic schools enjoined students yesterday to get out of the classrooms and off to the city's streets.
The reason? The Catholic school community here was making a statement backing the Catholic Church hierarchy on its anti-family bill stance.
With public invites issued in the past week, yesterday saw the Church-led rally dubbed as "March for Life." Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus (CHJ) was among the biggest contingent with high school students in tow.
A letter was sent out to parents of the students Wednesday seeking permission for yesterday's out of school activity.
"The Christian Community is again alarmed and disturbed by the news that the Reproductive Health Bills were again discussed in the Congress. If not prevented, these bills could be approved and implemented. We in Colegio delas Hijas de Jesus believe that these bills pose a threat to the morals of our society," the letter as obtained by The News Today (TNT) went. "Therefore, we firmly say, CHJ is pro-God, pro-marriage, pro-life and pro-family. No to artificial birth control. No to free sex. No to mandatory sex education (teaching elementary pupils how to use contraceptives). No to Reproductive Health Bills."
The letter went on to state the reason for the permission sought.
"In solidarity with those who care for the future of the children, the CHJ High School Students, Faculty and Staff will join the March for Life from University of San Agustin to the Freedom Grandstand and the Prayer Rally against Reproductive House Bills...." the letter continued. "We would like to ask for your support by allowing your child to join in the aforementioned activities... Let us fight for Faith, Family, Life and Morality."
