The city government yesterday distributed 402 schoolbags to pupils of of A. Mabini Elementary School. The 402 schoolbags is part of the 42,000 schoolbags intended for the city's public elementary schools. The free schoolbags program of the city government and City Schools Division is funded under the Special Education Fund (SEF).
The distribution rites was led by Mayor Jerry Treñas and DepEd City Schools Superintendent Erlinda Gencaya, members of the city school board, school officials and Parents, Teachers and Community Association (PTCA). Yesterday's distribution at the A. Mabini Elementary School was only ceremonial as distribution was also made in different schools in Jaro and Mandurriao districts.
The Local School Board appropriated P3 million for the procurement of the schoolbags for elementary pupils.
The schoolbags in colorful red and blue leatherette material has a logo "Jumpstart through education."
Treñas expressed happiness seeing the pupils receiving their share of schoolbags. He was even amused after one pupil bravely told him that she needs another schoolbag for her classmate who is sick. The pupil was advised to give the name of her classmate to their teacher to get her share of free schoolbag.
The shipment of schoolbags comes in batches. The chief executive wants that the schoolbags be immediately distributed to the pupils. At present, 50 percent of the total shipment arrived in the city.
The free schoolbags is part of the city government's commitment in helping the schoolchildren. The expenses of the parents would be lessened with the free schoolbags and school supplies. Last July, the city also gave free school supplies.
