The turbulent month of August
August 2008 started with the greatest show on earth, the August 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nearly 100 million people viewed the exciting competitions over television and some three million game enthusiasts flocked to the City of Beijing, China to see for themselves the joy and excitement of the world sports event. The Chinese government spent $40 billion in hosting the most expensive and glamorous sports galore ever took place in the world since the Grecian Olympic started in 776 AD. There were more than 24 new world sports records set and the first American swimmer Michael Phelps to bag eight gold medals.
While millions cheered for their favorite sports heroes, events in other parts of the world during August were unwelcome. In Guatemala, ten people perished as a result of humanitarian work. Spanair jet crushed in mid-August with 154 passengers burned to death and only 14 survivors accounted for. A tragedy in the French avalanche which accounts for eight people killed. The invasion of Georgia by Russia where thousands of Georgian killed. Chemical plant explosion in China with 16 people burned.
Pakistan strongman Musharaf resigned and days of fighting erupted in Karachi where hundreds of people got hurt and killed. World population statistics showed 4 out 7 people all over the world are poor. Gustav hurricane battered the Carribean countries and brought havoc to the economy of Cuba. Indian flooding caused thousands of people fleeing their homes with 47 dead. Hurricane Fay brought disaster in Florida and neighboring states with 22 people dead. Dozens perished in Kyrgyzstan plane crash. And the Beijing historic Olympic ended with splendor and fanfare and pageantry on August 24. London, the next venue of the 30th Olympic in 2012, stole the show with hundreds of Londoners dancing to their toes to celebrate the holding of the next world big event. The cost of the London Olympic is estimated to be 29 billion pound sterling. Dozens more tragedies happened in August the world over.
Some 1.5 million Americans evacuated to safer place before Gustav hit New Orleans and Louisiana. Gustav hurricane is heading inland in the U.S. Coast and had reached the Gulf of Mexico by end of August. Republican National Convention was moved back.
Are these already signs that Jesus Christ is coming? Christians are prepared to meet their Messiah and Coming King. How about the unsaved people all around the world who did not know the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? Repent now sinners and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and be born again. Live a life of Jesus Christ while waiting for His coming soon. You have nothing to lose if you are in Jesus and everything to gain if you are born again and had accepted the Lord as your God and the prize is eternal life in heaven.
