City Council wants probe on 'ammonia leak'
BACOLOD CITY – The Sangguniang Panglungsod has called on the City Health Office (CHO) and the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) to conduct an inquiry on the reported leakage of ammonia from the San Miguel Brewery plant in Brgy. Granada here.
The call for inquiry was made through a resolution passed by City Councilor Catalino Alisbo.
Last week 16 pupils from Patricia Homes Elementary School in Brgy. Granada were rushed to the hospital due to extreme dizziness, vomiting, difficulty of breathing and severe stomach aches.
The chemical ammonia reportedly leaked from the said plant affecting the said schoolchildren.
Alisbo noted that it is not the first time that an ammonia leak occurred in the beverage plant.
He said that in August of 2004, eight teachers and 14 students from Don Generoso Villanueva High School also became unconscious because of what was believed as an ammonia leak from the San Miguel plant.
Alisbo claimed that the alleged ammonia leak of the San Miguel Brewery endangered the lives of students and teachers of Patricia Homes Elementary School and Don Generoso Villanueva High School and is a clear violation of City Ordinance No. 313 Series of 2002 and is in disregard of public safety which if not acted immediately may cause death of these students and teachers.
