Meat dealers decry thievery at new slaughterhouse
Meat vendors and dealers have complained that the animals slaughtered at the city's new slaughterhouse in Barangay Tacas, Jaro already lack parts when returned to them after slaughtering eventually affecting their business.
A meat vendor who asked for anonymity told The News Today that the internal parts of the slaughtered hogs like the intestines and the liver are not given back to them and that some portions of the hogs are missing.
The source said, since the new abattoir started operating they have lost several kilos of pork meat and other internal parts of the hogs. He noticed that portions in between the hog's stomach are usually cut-off.
The source said they are paying P300 pesos for the slaughter of each hog and yet it has missing body parts when delivered to them.
He said the situation was much better when the slaughtering was still conducted in the old slaughterhouse in Molo district.
He could not determine who takes the missing animal parts.
The city government provided personnel for the operation of the new slaughterhouse. In the old abattoir each hog owners have their own butchers.
The source called on City Veterinarian Dr. Tomas Forteza, in-charge of the new slaughterhouse, to address their complaint as they lose hundreds of pesos everyday.
The source added that if the problem continues they would have their animals slaughtered in the municipalities where they can be assured that the slaughtered animals are returned to them completely.
In fact, the source said at present there are meat dealers who opted to have their animals slaughtered in Passi City where they are allowed to monitor the slaughtering of animals.
The new slaughterhouse, which is double A standard, started operations last May. The slaughterhouse, equipped with modern facilities, can accommodate more than 600 heads of hogs daily.
TNT was not able to reach Dr. Forteza for a reaction over the weekend.
