Military on alert as intel sources bare Reds' 'Operation Landmine'
A medical mission slated on Friday in the Municipality of Leon, Iloilo is the latest target of communist terrorists in the area.
This, as a highly-credible informant divulged planned destabilization on Friday.
Captain Lowen Gil Marquez, commanding officer of the 3rd Civil Relations Group of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) here, confirmed the report. The planners are remaining hardcore communist terrorists in the district reportedly bent on sabotaging the medical mission.
The attack, according to Captain Marquez, involved an elaborate plan to bury landmines in a major road section of the town.
The News Today (TNT) further gathered that the targeted area is the route along Barangay Buntalan to Barangay Durog. It was not immediately clear what team is slated to conduct a medical mission here. The Buntalan-Durog road network is the only link of commuters from the Poblacion town proper towards the famed Bucari community. It was also one of the hardest hit barangays during Typhoon Frank with the major bridge in Barangay Buntalan damaged.
To date, a makeshift alternate route serves as main passage of all commuters with at least a hundred vehicles passing daily including tricycles and passenger jeepneys.
Army soldiers in the targeted area and surrounding villages have been alerted alongside information relayed as well to members of the local police.
TNT sources gathered further that Leon Mayor Romulo Cabana was personally apprised of the report.
One of the major "landmine operations" of the communist terrorists banding under the New People's Army (NPA) was the Calinog attack few years back.
