School-based disaster management council formed
BACOLOD CITY -- Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, head of Public Safety Management and Emergency Section (PSMES), confirmed yesterday that the city government had formed a School Disaster Management Council to respond to the problem of ammonia leak from the plant of San Miguel Corporation in Brgy. Granada, Bacolod City.
He said the school disaster council will conduct an evacuation drill for the students of Patricia Homes Elementary School at Brgy. Granada who are directly affected by the ammonia leak.
The disaster council was formally created last week after Vargas met with some parents, principal and teachers of said school.
"We will also come up with a monitoring team to check diligently the problem areas due to ammonia leak," he said.
The composition of monitoring team will come from the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) City Health Office (CHO), teachers, parents and City Mayor's Office.
Last month of August at least 16 pupils from Patricia Homes Elementary School were hospitalized due to the foul odor from the plant of San Miguel Corporation.
Vargas suggested to the management of San Miguel if they could provide an alarm system and water curtain so that in case of emergency the pupils of Patricia Homes could be evacuated immediately.
