Brgy. Felisa officials on dumpsite issue: Why our place?
BACOLOD CITY – Officials of Barangay Felisa have asked, through a resolution, Mayor Evelio Leonardia to furnish them a copy of the result of thefeasibility study for the city's solid waste management program which was conducted and funded by the Spanish Government.
They also asked a copy of any documents from concerned government agencies showing Brgy. Felisa as the best or ideal site for a sanitary landfill.
The move is in line with the barangay officials' strong opposition to the continued use of an area in their barangay as a dumpsite.
Brgy. Captain Peregrino Aspan said that they are opposing the continued dumping of waste in their barangay because the three years temporary agreement had already expired last January 19, 2008.
"Since the start of the operation of the City's open dumpsite in Felisa, the City or the Solid Waste Management Board, if it exists, has never sit down with the Barangay Council to talk about dumpsite concerns," part of the resolution reads.
The barangay officials clarified that Brgy. Felisa "in its willingness to help the city agreed to host a temporary controlled dumpsite for three years to save the City of Smile from becoming the "city of smell" when the people of Brgy. Mandalagan finally decided to stop the dumping of garbage in their area in 2005."
Theyalso lamented that there is a greater possibility that the value of the land nearby will drop and investors/real property developers will not be coming over due to bad impression of a dumpsite.
The officials also complained that the City of Bacolod acquired a new waste disposal facility adjacent to the existing dumpsite without consulting first the barangay council whether it is willing to accommodate or host a permanent dumpsite.
They insisted that the city did not comply with its promise to operate a controlled dumpsite from the very start "so how can we trust the city to operate a landfill facility when it cannot practice simple controlled dumping?"
