Capiz nutrition program gets NNC help
ROXAS CITY – The nutrition program of the province of Capiz will get support from the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in mainstreaming its activities into the hunger mitigation program of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
NNC Western Visayas Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona B. Tad-y said the council will help Capiz identify activities to be implemented and how best these projects would be carried out in line with the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) of President Arroyo.
Tad-y said the Arroyo administration is pursuing the AHMP as President Arroyo's landmark program to address poverty, hunger and malnutrition in 54 food-poor provinces nationwide.
Capiz has been identified as of the three priority provinces for AHMP in the region.
Under the program, the province including its 16 municipalities will be recipients of a package of services including nutrition, said Tad-y.
The provincial government under Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. has put in place programs on hunger mitigation and nutrition in line with President Arroyo's overall agenda. He has designated Salim Biclar of the Provincial Planning and Development Office as provincial nutrition action officer.
Hunger mitigation is one of the commitments of the Philippine government in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which were initiated by the United Nations (UN) to held improve the lives of the poor.
Specifically, the Philippines has committed to eradicate by one-half extreme poverty and hunger between 1990 and 2015 or the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people, and halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger between 1990 and 2015.
The MDG commitments were signed by 186 UN members-states including the Philippines in 2000. (PIA-JSC)
