Capiz dads urge BFAD to recall contaminated milk from China
ROXAS CITY – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in its regular session last Thursday had approved two resolutions directing the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) to temporarily recall from retail or wholesale stores and stop offering or selling of milk products and their by-products manufactured from China.
The two resolutions were authored by Board Member Esteban "Nonoy" Contreras and unanimously seconded by members of the provincial board.
"The world was stunned in the past few days by reports of thousands of children in China and Hongkong who were downed by melamine-tainted powder and liquid milk produced by three leading dairy companies. Some of those children did not fare well, they died," Contreras said in his privilege before passing the resolutions.
According to him, Melamine is a nitrogen industrial chemical used in the production of plastic products that Chinese manufacturers use to boost apparent protein presence, thus helping mask dilution of a milk product's protein deficiency.
He added that manufacturers use melamine to boost their profit. But by increasing their profit they also increase the certainty of their consuming infants to develop kidney stones and eventually death.
Contreras also said that many countries to include the Philippines are importing milk from China. Aside from being an importer, the Philippines is also host to smuggled Chinese products including milk and its by-products such as ice cream, yogurt, candies, breads, cookies and many others.
The author of the two resolutions said that he would like to echo the warning of the BFAD for the public to stop buying or consuming the aforesaid products until notice of assurance for the said government agency for their fitness for human consumption.
