2008 search for OFW model family highlights family values
The values that traditional Filipino families uphold are often times shattered because a parent has to leave for overseas work, hence, OFWs' families need distinct care and attention.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) 6 chief James Mendiola said the 2008 search for Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) is anchored on the theme "Parangal sa Matatag na Pamilyang OFW" to emphasize the importance of family values in the midst of trying situations.
Mendiola said circumstances of struggles, of pain of separation, of adjustments and culture shock, of loneliness and hard work, of coping with the growth of children left behind, are leaving too much pressure to the OFWs and their families.
Mendiola said despite these, many OFWs and their families have shown steadfastness worth emulating and recognizing by other Filipinos here and abroad.
He said this is the reason why OWWA has launched the search which is now on its 4thyear.
The MOFYA is designed to give recognition to outstanding OFW families for having achieved success in all aspects of their lives in the face of struggles, pains and difficulties the families have underwent.
Mendiola said that it is along this struggle to cope among OFW families that OWWA finds it important for family members to be present during the pre-departure seminars so that they can support each other and strengthen the values that can hold them together as family even if a member is abroad.
The 2007 Model OFW Family National Awardees were the families of OFW Oscar A. De Jesus for Luzon, OFW Eugenio B. Atuel, Jr. for Visayas and Virgencita A. Lagunsay for Mindanao. (PIA 6/ESS)
