Ombudsman takes battle vs graft, corruption in Guimaras
Nationwide advocacy and battle against graft and corruption initiated by the Office of the Ombudsman makes a two-day stopover in the island-province of Guimaras.
Day one starts today with a dialogue between Deputy Ombudsman Pelagio Apostol and local officials primarily with Governor Felipe Nava, members of the Guimaras provincial board, and town executives.
The News Today (TNT) learned that a "Pledge of Commitment" will be presented to the Guimaras officials aimed at getting "official" support on the campaign for good governance.
An environmental forum will then follow where the Ombudsman will be briefed on the island's environmental problems. To note, the island was recently rocked by planned mining operations in Nueva Valencia.
Graft Investigation Officer Dr. Belle Quijano will moderate an open forum with panelists, Environmental Ombudsman Mark Jalandoni and Assistant Ombudsman for the Visayas Virginia Palanca-Santiago.
Further still, questions will be addressed by Mines and Geosciences burea regional director, Engineer Leo Van Juguan. Governor Nava is also expected to join the panel.
Day two continues Friday with an overview for the islanders on the functions of the Office of the Ombudsman as anti-graft body of the government.
Specific discussions will focused on the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act covered by Republic Act (RA) 3019 and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Government Officials and Employees under RA 6713.
Main speaker here is Deputy Ombudsman Apostol.
Relatedly, the Guimaras officials will also be reminded of the ongoing Oplan Red Plate, the campaign against mis-use of government vehicles. The task is assigned to lawyer Ma. Sonnette Daquita, Graft Investigation and Prosecution Officer 1.
And to cap the two-day forum will be the signing of the Pledge of Commitment to be witnessed by top Ombudsman officials.
Serving as master of ceremonies here will be Evangeline Nuñal.
