Barangays Mandalagan, Bata top 2008 Masskara streetdance contest

BACOLOD CITY -- The Masskara dancers of Barangay Mandalagan was adjudged as 2008 Champion in Streetdance Competition - Open Category after their impressive performance witnessed by foreign and local tourists last Saturday at the Bacolod Public Plaza.
They were also named as Best in Mask during the awarding ceremony led by Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and some city officials.
The Masskara dancers of Barangay Villamonte who had been a consistent champion in previous years placed second while last year's champion in Barangay Category, Barangay 23, placed third.

Barangay Villamonte was also given three special awards, namely, best in Call and Response, Best in Costume and Best in Choreography. The best in concept award went to Barangay 23.
During the awarding rites, Mayor Leonardia extended his thanks to the Silver Masskara Festival Organization, Inc. led by Mr. Eli Francis Tajanlangit and also to Mr. Rudy Reveche, chairman of the Streetdance 2008 competition.
Mandalagan joined the streetdance competition this year after the last ten years. Barangay Captain Elvis Agsam of Mandalagan thanked all the private sponsors who had extended their support and initiative to make them on top on this year's Masskara competition.

As champion, Brgy. Mandalagan received P100,000 and trophy. The second placer Brgy. Villamonte received P75,000 and trophy and Brgy. 23 got a cash prize of P50,000 and also a trophy.
Meanwhile, Barangay Bata grabbed the championship crown in the barangay category of the Masskara Festival street dance competition held on Friday.
Twenty-two barangays in Bacolod City joined the competition.
Barangay Mandalagan was named 1st runner up and Barangay 23 as 2nd runner up.

Those which won the special awards were Barangay Bata as Best in Concept and Best in Choreography. Barangay Mandalagan was named as Best in Costume and Call and Response. Barangay 30 as Best in Mask.
The concept of Barangay Bata symbolizes the different parts of cultural and economic aspects of Bacolod City.
Barangay 30's mask is made up of indigenous materials such as straw, rope, hose, empty plastic bottles and Anahaw leaves.

William Bangcaya is the choreographer of Barangay Bata.
Judith Agapay Maghari was the designer of the festival costume of Barangay Mandalagan.
Stephen Tana and DMD was the Mask Designer of Barangay 30.
