City awards cleanest and greenest barangays
BACOLOD CITY -- Barangay Handumanan, Barangay Punta Taytay and Barangay 13 were recently adjudged as the cleanest barangay in Rural, Coastal and Urban category, respectively, during the awarding rites held at the Liga ng Barangay Hall last Friday.
The awarding was spearheaded by the Bacolod City Task Force Clean and Green under the leadership of City Councilor Greg Gasataya.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia who attended the awarding rites challenged all barangay leaders to sustain their clean and green program and inculcate the importance of healthy living in a clean environment.
"I have personal attachment with this program because during my first term in 1995, Bacolod was adjudged as National Champion in the Clean and Green Contest," Leonardia said. He further emphasized that "this is not a 'ningas cogon' type of program but a program that needs sustainability and should be made a way of life. It is a challenge for the barangay leaders that the competition will also motivate and inspire them to continue the project, not just for the award, but for the character formation in the barangay. It will also show how effective they are as leaders."
In the Rural Area Category, Handumanan won the first place with P50,000 cash prize and P5,000 for each special award in Well-Maintained Cluster of Ornamental Plants and Landscaped Garden Plants, Functional Waste Segregation Center or Material Recovery Facility and Composting.
