Nowadays it's too difficult for people to motivate to read. The generation today is coated with visual and high-tech gadgets that turn both the young and the young at heart and escape the beauty of reading. I can still remember my college mentor saying that there is no such thing as rubbish reading. Every bit that you read is beneficial on your part. I would like to share the article I assigned to my student, Anna Alyssa Robledo about the importance of reading. AA for short, is the associate editor of The Yelllow Bird, the official student publication of St. Joseph School.
"Books for Keeps"
Serenity and order is very elusive in a world where people just have many things to think of. It's seems impossible to grasp the stillness and peace in one's mind if almost everybody has their own language. Though there are many ways where we can achieve the quiet moment, I know a simple way where one can comprehend the stressful life and venture themselves in limitless imaginations.
George Steiner, a literary critique and novelist, coined books as the best antidote against the marsh-gas of boredom and vacuity. If you come to think of it, his quotation is something worth pondering. To most of us, books are just plainly bunch of paper that are bound together and serves as a means of learning in a formal scholastically way, which is also true. But the function of the book doesn't totally limit itself to learning. The world of books is boundless. Just by reading a book, our imaginations travel to different places we even haven't been yet. Our creativity expands at its full extent as we turn a page. Books are like the best gifts of the literary gods. It is in their own masterpiece that we widen our thoughts and ideas to a new portal of fascination.
When times go stressful and demanding, we always find ourselves looking for an outlet. Kids nowadays spend mostly all their time meeting their leisure needs by watching television and playing the computer. In reality, we can't deny these types of entertainment also functions as learning medium. But reading books has another whole benefits when it comes to learning. When we read, our skills in literature are honed. We are opening a room for an improvement of our grammatical knowledge. You may say that there are other ways to learn this but the best authors once have their shelves of best books.
Books are like for nerdy people, as most of us will conclude. In our cartoon description, nerds are the one who carries a lot of books in their hand and spends all day reading. In context, books and the library in this case do not only welcome nerdy people. Of all the places, the library is one of the quietest places. Thinking that the library is a cool place to grab a book and reading it places you in a good perspective and point. If you can't afford trips around the world, visit the library and travel the wonderful scenes in every corner in different time lines.
A humorous quote of Groucho Marx goes something like this: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read". It is very shallow but if you think it over it does sounds true. Dogs are also like books, they are man's best friend. Even in your times of depression, a good book can really cheer you up. A book can be your companion in the loneliest places. A book can also be your regular spa trip in times of stress.
Bookworms, people who read a lot of books, do not only end up learning a lot of knowledge. Their interest also widens because their ideas becomes fine and descriptive. They are usually the one who succeeds because they do get a lot of information in just reading. They are the ones who are usually being praised in class because of the extra knowledge and their advancement.
Best-selling books like "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow, "Harry Potter" series by J.K Rowling, "Twilight" saga by Stephanie Meyer and "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupéry are recommend for kids and teens who have passion and interest for reading. These are examples of books that make us innovative with our minds because it projects our inspirations and creativeness.
Books are beneficial and reading is good for us. When we see people embracing books in their arms, we don't call them nerds. These are some people who made difference and stood up for what they believe. People like these picked up their glasses that slide smoothly under their sweaty nose bridge because they know that reading can help them in their lives. These are the people who preserved the advantages of reading through generations. The slow diminishing of reading in our every day modern lives crawls through each one of us. We should not let this happen and still continue flipping pages day to day. After all, books are just there for keeps.
