3 UPV-made animation shorts finalists in Animahenasyon 2008
Three animation projects locally made here at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) just made it through as finalists in the recently concluded Animahenasyon: Pinoy Animation Festival 2008 held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 12-15 November.
Prof. Jonathan P. Jurilla, one of the three finalists, also bagged a special citation award for his entry, Samtang Bilog ang Bulan (While It is Full Moon). He was also a finalist during the last year’s Animahenasyon festival.
The other two finalists were Richard Troy A. Colmenares for his entry RB: Makabagong Bayani and Marlon O. Bandoja for his entry Poo-ping.
All their entries were 3D animation shorts modeled and animated in Blender, an open-source computer application.
Animahenasyon is a yearly festival sponsored by the Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. (ACPI), a non-stock non-profit organization based in Metro Manila whose main aim is to promote the local animation industry.
Now on its second year, Animahenasyon is participated in by local animators—professionals, students and hobbyists—all over the country.
Although the festival is dominated by entries from Metro Manila, a few entries from the provinces like Iloilo and Davao were able to get into the competition.
Animation projects are now being developed in UPV Miagao.
With the help of an open source software, Prof. Jurilla is currently finishing another 3D animated short film which will be included in the six short-film series of the Division of Humanities to be shown during the first quarter of 2009. He is also conducting a research project together with Prof. Francis Dimzon of the UPV Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, on the use of Blender as a tool for 3D animation.
Prof. Jurilla is currently the chairperson of the Division of Humanities. He teaches literature subjects and make animation projects during his spare time.
Mr. Colmenares and Mr. Bandoja are both products of the BS Computer Science offered by the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics.
