CBCP scores revival of cha-cha moves thru Con-ass
The influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) yesterday voiced its opposition to the renewed moves by congressmen to amend the Constitution through a Constituent Assembly (Con-ass) and called on the people to "watch, critique and denounce the manipulations of government."
In a statement, CBCP President and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo reiterated earlier CBCP pastoral statements opting for a Constitutional Convention in amending the Constitution.
"Understanding the gravity of Charter Change and its perceived consequences, the CBCP has expressed its negative judgment on the proposal of the House of Representatives to convert themselves into a Constituent Assembly," said Lagdameo.
The prelate said they agree with members of civil society in opposing any proposal to extend the term of elected officials.
At least 150 members of the House have reportedly signed a resolution that will convene the House into a Constituent Assembly. The move is being spearheaded by allies of the President including her son Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo.
Lagdameo said any change in the Constitution should be through a Con-Con and after the 2010 elections.
He said that what the country needs more are honest leaders instead of a change in the form of government.
"...What our country more urgently needs is to look for and elect people who will govern us with honesty above all, with integrity, truthfulness, justice and accountability. More change the form of our government, they are those who are guilty of corruption who need to be change or be changed," said Lagdameo.
He said the the biggest problem being faced by the country is is the global economic crisis which has resulted in the "growing number of poor people in the midst of corruption."
The prelate said the bayanihan spirit of pagtutulungan by both rich and poor will of a great help in facing the crisis.
He urged the people to "pray for enlightenment and to seek for what is best for the country in order that she may rise up with right vising and hope."
