Mayor orders check on guns acquired for city cops
City Mayor Jerry Treñas has ordered the City Legal Office (CLO) and the Bids and Awards Committee to come up with an agreement for the winning bidder in the procurement of P336,000 worth of .45 caliber pistols to immediately test fire the guns.
Treñas' order came after the recent outcome in the purchase of specialized guns intended for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Iloilo City Police Office.
The guns delivered by the winning bidder allegedly are not in good condition. The city bought the guns from a Manila supplier for more than P100,000. Treñas did not name the winning bidder.
The guns were returned since a one-year warranty was included in the contract. The supplier will replace the defective firearms bought by the city government for the use of the SWAT.
The new conditions to be stipulated in the contract would include the presence of the winning bidder, the end users of the firearms and members of the BAC. As soon as the firearms are delivered, it will be subjected into a test fire.
The mayor admits he is not a gun enthusiast and he is not particular on the brand and its parts. He said it is better to have it submitted into a test with the end users as they are more familiar with it.
