City intensifies waste segregation drive
BACOLOD CITY -- Sangguniang Panglungsod Member Greg Gasataya, chair of the Clean and Green Coordinating Action Team, confirmed yesterday that the city government has already started a massive information drive on waste segregation particularly in various establishments and 61 barangays in the city of Bacolod.
This is in response to the series of workshops conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to all Local Government Units in compliance with the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Gasataya last week received an official communication from DENR Regional Office VI for another meeting scheduled on December 8, 2008 along with top DENR officials whereby their discussion will again focus on hospital wastes.
Gasataya noted that waste segregation from hospitals and any other establishments is very vital since this is the subject of the complaint of Brgy. Felisa residents who opposed the dumping of garbages in their area.
With regard to the issue of uncollected garbage last week, Gasataya apologized to the affected residents because, he said, 4 out of 24 dumptrucks suffered mechanical trouble.
Gasataya likewise said that aside from mechanical trouble, the city is also confronted with the problem on lack of fuel.
Meanwhile, Gasataya confirmed that the Sangguniang Panglungsod had approved the loan agreement of P39.5 million between the city government and the Development Bank of the Philippines. The money would be used to finance the city's priority projects particularly the purchase of equipment for the flood control program.
