Lawmakers must focus in strengthening Philippine economy
The fourth impeachment bid against President Gloria Arroyo for her alleged large-scale corruption has already folded. It is now a must for the members of the House of Representatives to focus on its task of law making.
The lawmakers must instead draw up strategies and craft legislative measures in protecting the country from the global financial crisis rather than focusing on the constitutional ouster of President Arroyo and create destabilization in the government.
The government must not overplay the effects brought about by US recession to the country. The developments in the US will have a severe impact on the local economy as the US remains one of the country's top exports and investments partners.
Our lawmakers must realize the importance of strengthening the country's economy. For now, our country's economy is much more stable compared in other countries in South East Asia. Nation leaders must not waste time on unnecessary pursuits and trivial matters.
Even an ordinary Filipino could observe the much time and effort spent by lawmakers on the impeachment attempts against President Arroyo in the past four years. President Arroyo will end her six-year term in 2010, has survived two coup attempts and four impeachment attempts.
The impeachment is a numbers game. Nothing has changed in the number of congressmen supporting the President then and now. No impeachment attempts will prosper unless required number of votes from the congressmen is reached by the proponent.
Filipinos will appreciate the lawmakers more if they take extra efforts in helping strengthen the Philippine economy. And support in all the initiatives in addressing hunger and poverty in the country.
There are areas in the country that has yet to see the face of the government. No basic infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, school, no power to illuminate their homes and no enough food to feed their mouths.
With more than a year to go before the 2010 elections, there is no much time left for our leaders in coping up with their work that benefits their constituents. For politicians eyeing a national position, the period is too short to "officially" start their campaign.
The recent impeachment attempt became an opportune time for number of congressmen to get media attention in pushing the impeachment process. For sure, the electorates will have time to think and consider all the "performances" of the candidates for the national position comes 2010 local and national elections.
