Top 10
How time flies so fast! It seems that the year 2008 is just a blink of an eye as it unfolds another year. Fifteen more days before year 2009, I gathered the best and the highlights of this year from politics to entertainment and even to the local scenes.
- June 21 – The remarkable date to all Ilonggos as super typhoon Frank hit Region VI leaving hundreds of death, destruction that costs more than hundred million and the scar of trauma to all inhabitants. Yes, including me.
- Pacman rules – Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao proved that the boxing ring really belongs to him as he knocked down Oscar de la Hoya during the 8thround. A Filipino once again made a mark in the entire boxing history. FYI, he is the world's No.1 boxer. I'm proud to be Pinoy!
- Drilon kidnapping – In quest for authenticated facts for a documentary about the Abu Sayyaf, Ces Drilon together with her team faced the greatest challenge of their lives as they were kidnapped for couple of days in the middle of the jungle in Mindanao.
- Charisse Pempengco – A 16 year-old Filipina who gain standing ovation in her performance before a crowd in the USA. Her dream of singing with her idol Celine Dion came into reality (Thanks to Oprah Winfrey) and even made appearances in the US free TV that made her an instant international star (Thanks to YouTube).
- For the First Time – Yes, for the first time in history, the two rival TV networks, GMA 7 and ABS CBN agreed to produce a movie which stars KC Concepcion and Richard Gutierrez. The team up was a great success in tilt (as expected) and for sure another movie coming February of next year.
- Templars the Champ! - St. Joseph School (Iloilo), Inc. basketball team "Templars" nailed the PRISAA 2008 basketball game. For the first time, SJS high school team grabbed the trophy after five years of waiting. Kudos to all of you guys especially to their coach, Sir Tata Belangel. Go St. Joseph!
- Oust the PM! - Thais just proven that democracy rules. After Thai protesters took control of the airport causing the cancellation of all incoming and outgoing flights for several days, at long last a new prime minister is elected. The effort is worth after all.
- US new prexy – November 4 was the date that changed America's line up of presidents as Barack Obama, an Afro-American was declared winner a day after.
- Philippine politics – Cha-cha is still on the move, House Bill 5043 (Reproductive Health Bill) is still debatable between the church and the legislature, PGMA's SONA that earned mixed reactions and the political mockery which is still evident in the Philippine scenario. In addition, the questionable giving of executive clemency to Claudio Teehankee Jr. and the appearance Jocelyn "Joc joc" Bolante and his side on the very controversial fertilizer scam.
- Twilight – Most of us thought December is just only the season of Christmas, however vampires ruled the box office this month. Twilight captured the hearts of the moviegoers as well as the novel readers. It is a story of passionate and unorthodox romance between two different dimensions. Watch the movie, it's worth a penny!
(HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr. - Department of Education Regional Director (Region VI)
