Capiz health authorities want effective strategy to eliminate filariasis in 2009
ROXAS CITY – An effective strategy to eliminate filariasis cases in the province is being eyed by the Capiz health authorities for 2009.
This was told by Provincial Health Office (PHO) Medical Specialist IV Evelyn T. Bolido when asked about the next steps to be undertaken in view of the worm disease transmitted to humans through bites of infected female mosquitoes.
"A PHO and Department of Health (DOH) meeting can be possible for the strategy," she said.
Meanwhile, forty six deformities which are either elephantiasis or hydrocele have been recorded in a province-wide deformity survey conducted by midwives and Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) from October to November.
"But these could not be officially included in the 41 filariasis positive from Tapaz yet," Bolido noted.
The random deformity survey is among the PHO's plan of actions following a documented filariasis cases in Tapaz town during a survey by a team of health workers last September.
A selective treatment was also conducted by the PHO last November to 41 filariasis victims from the various barangays of Tapaz town. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
