Green alert backs CBCP call for environmental protection
BACOLOD CITY -- Green Alert Negros supports the recent call of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on the government and other stakeholders to help protect the country's natural resources to be able to secure the future.
In a recent Pastoral Letter entitled, Upholding the Sanctity of Life (20 years after the CPCP Pastoral Letter What is Happening to our Beautiful Land?), CBCP president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo stressed the urgency for the faithful to take care of the environment as the natural calamities being experienced in the country are getting worst.
"We support this important call of CBCP and we still support Bishop Vicente Navarra in his consistent stand against the EDC geothermal project in Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park. The lies of EDC has to end making the public, our priests, friends from the media, and other institution believe that there project is legal and acceptable," Green Alert asserted..
Green Alert Negros consistently keeps its non-negotiable position on the issue in Mt. Kanlaon and recently called the EDC Project as a violation of human rights. It also charged EDC, DENR, DOE and the Provincial Government guilty of human rights violation.
"The CBCP statement is timely especially here in Negros when the government has no moral ascendancy when it comes to environmental protection. The Provincial Government and the DENR are the architects in a systematic cutting of trees like what EDC geothermal project is doing inside Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park," Green Alert said.
"With problems of upland dwellers still depending in kaingin and charcoal-making where trees are cut and worst the indiscriminate cutting of 4,000 trees inside Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park by EDC, who now has the moral ascendancy to stop this?" Green Alert asked.
