Mother throws one-year old son from ship
A one-year old boy drowned after his mother threw him from a passenger ship before she jumped overboard Tuesday morning.
Commander Harold Jarder, acting commander of the Coast Guard station in Iloilo, identified the fatality as Jacob Pabuaya of Barangay Banago in Bacolod City.
Jacob died after his mother Flordeluna, 27, threw him from Negros Navigation vessel M/V St. Peter the Apostle while the ship was passing Sicogon Island in Carles town in Iloilo at around 8:45 a.m.
Flordeluna, believed to be mentally disturbed, survived after the crew of the ship picked the two from the waters, according to Jarder.
The ship was on its way to Bacolod City from Manila when Flordeluna suddenly threw her son over the railings.
While passengers were shouting in surprise, she then jumped from the ship, said Jarder in a telephone interview citing a report of Negros Navigation manager in Iloilo Jonas Gagajenga.
Alerted by other passengers, the ship's crew maneuvered the vessel to rescue the two passengers. They were able to pick out Flordeluna and her son after 45 minutes but the boy was already dead.
