Treñas asks residents to join clean up drive
City Mayor Jerry Treñas has called on the city residents to join in this Saturday’s clean up drive in preparation for the 2009 Dinagyang festival. The one-day clean up campaign will be participated by the different barangays, schools and private organizations.
The route of the clean up starts in city areas leading to the Cabatuan airport. The clean up was aimed to impress the visitors who will witness the yearly festival in honor of Senior Sto. Nino. The festival is expected to draw number of local and foreign tourists and the city government wants to leave an impression that Iloilo City is clean and green.
Treñas said the clean up drive will start with a motorcade at 6:30 in the morning of January 17 and by 7 a.m. the participants begin their work by removing graffitis on different edifice leading to the city proper. There will also be “whitewashing” of road gutters.
Graffitis are visible in private properties, cemented enclosures and overpass in the city. Several overpass in the city have been the favorite shelter areas of Aetas, street children and other individuals with no place to stay.
The city mayor said the effort to make Iloilo City clean and ready for the festival has been coordinated with the barangay captains particularly in barangays included in the route list. The clean up was also done in previous years.
