SP warns public to avoid imported peanut butter
The Sangguniang Panglungsod Wednesday passed a resolution requesting and urging the city mayor through the City Health Office, Departmentof Education with the assistance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), peoples organization and all sectors to conduct an information drive for the general public to strictly avoid purchasing U.S. imported peanut butter products.
Councilor Napoleon Cordova, chairman of the Committee on Health and author of the resolution said the imported peanut butter was recalled by U.S manufacturer due to salmonella.
"The public should be aware of the situation until further advice by the Bureau of Foods and Drugs," he added.
Cordova cited that under the 1987 Philippine Constitution, Article II, Section 15, the state shall protect and promote the right to health of the people and instill health consciousness among them.
The BFAD is now on investigation process if the same U.S peanut butter products which are suspected to contain salmonella are available in the Philippine market.
"It urges the consumers to postpone eating any products that may contain peanut butter until additional information becomes available," he added.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause infections, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
