Ilonggo artists join exhibit for a cause
Twelve Ilonggo artists are mounting Hiyas sang Villa (Treasures of Villa) at the Camiña Balay nga Bato in Arevalo district, Iloilo City.
Paintings, sculptures, mixed media pieces, drawings and portraits by Joe Amora, Alan Cabalfin, Ed Defensor, Junjun Duarte, Larry Dumagat, Martin Genodepa, Art Gerochi, Edgar Gonzales, Fred Orig, Pierre Patricio, and PG Zoluaga will be on display in the exhibit that aims to raise funds for the retrofitting of the historic plaza of Villa Rica de Arevalo.
Arevalo district in Iloilo City was the seat of the Spanish military forces in Panay Island and counts among its prominent children Melecio Figueroa, designer of the American period Philippine coins issued in 1903, Philippine commonwealth era Supreme Court Chief Justice Ramon Avanceña, and Sofia Reyes de Veyra, pioneer feminist and former Vice-President of Centro Escolar University. The National Historical Commission has set up markers and statues in the plaza to memorialize Arevalo’s history and distinguished personalities.
The exhibit which will open on February 7, Saturday, 5:30 in the afternoon is a project of Volunteer Ilonggos for the Love of La Villa Rica de Arevalo (VILLA), a non-profit organization established by concerned Arevalo residents to preserve the district’s cultural landmarks and heritage and help in its development.
