420 workers in Bacolod retrenched in January
BACOLOD CITY -- Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) Vice President Jose Ma. Zayco confirmed yesterday that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 6 reported that 420 employees from various establishments in the City of Bacolod and Negros Occidental were retrenched from January 1-28, 2009.
DOLE reported to MBCCI that several establishments applied for Closure Notice because they could no longer meet the financial side of their operations. Others temporarily slowed down due to the economic crisis.
Zayco, however, clarified that the establishments mentioned to have closed shop were not their members. He said that most of the affected establishments engaged in retailing and micro-lending business.
The report pointed out that Seaquest Fishing had retrenched 26 employees, Lopue's South Square, 40 employees; Sirus Star Gas Station, 11 employees; Lenville Lending, 3 employees; Power Point Marketing, 297 employees; and LCC-La Carlota 43 employees.
MBCCI further said that last year 2008, their were 19 employees who were subjected for termination due to valid and reasonable grounds.
Companies affected last year were Porky Pigs with 14 employees terminated, Alta Negros 3 employees and Golden Construction 2 employees.
On the other hand, former Vice Mayor Ramiro Garcia said that the imposition of higher taxes will affect the renewal of business permit considering that it was done without proper consultations with the business sector. He said the imposition of the new Revenue Code is also untimely as the world is suffering from economic crisis.
