Janiuay seeks DOJ help to go after ex-treasurers
Municipal officials of Janiuay, Iloilo are seeking assistance of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales to run after two former town officials.
Blamed on over P7.5 million in ‘missing’ funds, a Resolution was passed by the municipal council requesting Department of Justice (DOJ) intervention.
In a report, The News Today (TNT) gathered that held accountable were town treasurer Luzviminda Figueroa and former Officer-in-charge in the Treasurer’s Office Nora Almirante.
Figueroa is reportedly behind P3,370,443.99 in fund shortage while Almirante has P3,888,385.93 on record. The said amount remained unsettled as of December 31, 2008.
“…as of present there had been no cases filed against the above-named individuals for the reason that there had been no recommendations from the Commission on Audit (COA),” excerpts of Resolution No. 2009-36 as obtained by TNT went.
It was the COA’s post audit that led to the discovery of the millions in shortages which now prompted the call for DOJ action.
“..the Municipality of Janiuay, Province of Iloilo is beset with problems concerning the cases…,” the Resolution noted.
