2nd prov’l foundation day ‘Capiztahan’ to focus on governance
ROXAS CITY – Capiz, the birthplace of former President Manuel Acuña Roxas, will celebrate its second “Capiztahan,” April 13-15 to commemorate the 108thfoundation anniversary of Capiz.
Provincial Tourism Officer Alphonsus Tesoro said the event will focus on governance, its achievements and best practices under the administration of incumbent governor Victor Tanco.
The event commemorates the establishment of the Capiz civil government on April 15, 1901 by virtue of Commonwealth Act 115.
Tesoro said that in keeping with the objective of the celebration, one of its highlights will be the inauguration of new projects implemented by the administration of Gov. Tanco in line with his governance and development battlecry, “Pag-ulikid: Labi sa Tanan ang Tawo.”
The event will also showcase the conferment of recognition to Capiceños who have done outstanding achievements in their respective fields of endeavor. A selection committee led by Provincial Administrator Zoe Herrera is scheduled to convene February 25 to deliberate on the selection process.
Tesoro said they are also identifying other activities that would be part of the three-day celebration.
April 15 also marks the death anniversary of former President Roxas, Capiz’s most illustrious son,first President of the Philippine Republic. The occasion is a special non-working holiday in the province and this city.
The name Capiztahan was adopted by the provincial government for the foundation anniversary starting in 2008 as it embarked on activities designed to make the celebration more festive and meaningful in line with the rich cultural heritage of Capiz and the thrust of the provincial government to make the province an eco-cultural tourism hub in Central Philippines.
Capiz particularly the town of Panay became the second settlement of the Spaniards in the country after Cebu during the 16thcentury. The Sta. Monica Parish Church of the centuries-old town has one of the world’s biggest church bells.
The bell, cast in 1878 using 70 sacks of coins, weighs 1.4 tons and is 7 feet in height and 2 meters in diameter. Its booming sound can be heard 8 kilometers away. (PIA-JSC)
