City one of top 10 outsourcing locations in Asia-Pacific
The city was named as one of the top 10 highlighted destinations in Asia-Pacific in terms of outsourcing boom by an international firm.
KPMG, a global network of professional services firms providing audit, tax and advisory services, released a global list of cities considered as viable business process outsourcing (BPO) hubs.
In a report released by KPMG, the 31 locations are composed of “an eclectic mix, from well-known cities in developed countries to lesser-known places in the emerging markets.”
The locations were identified per continent, namely the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Aside from Iloilo City, the ten locations in Asia Pacific identified were Ahmedabad, India; Brisbane, Australia; Changsha, China; Davao City, Philippines; Hangzhou, China; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Jaipur, India; Nagpur, India and Penang, Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed his elation over this development, saying that this is another confirmation of the city’s latest reputation as a BPO center of the Philippines.
At present, there are at least four major call centers operating in the city with Teletech having its launching program just a few days ago and graced by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
All in all, these centers have employed at least 3,000 Ilonggos and Treñas is hopeful that the number will increase with the opening of DTSI in Amigo Plaza anytime soon and the constant queries received by his office regarding interested investors.
The mayor attributes the growth of the BPOs here to the high number of qualified applicants available as call center agents. All universities here produce a total of 17,000-18,000 graduates every school year. (PIO)
