Antique's capital town adopts 'No Plastic Day'
SAN JOSE, Antique – Saturday is “No Plastic Day” in this capital town of the province of Antique.
The policy is embodied in a resolution passed by the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) declaring every Saturday of the week as “No Plastic Day” in San Jose Tradetown and in Business Park.
The undertaking supported by the Municipal Government of San Jose de Buenavista in partnership with San Jose Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SJMPC), Tradetown Market Vendors Association and Alliance of Concerned Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (ACTODA) was officially launched last March 21, 2009 with a caravan around the townproper.
It aims to increase awareness of the people in the community to reduce, re-use, recycle and if possible refrain from using plastic bags every time they do marketing at the Tradetown Market and the Business Park.
The adoption of “No Plastic Day” is expected to minimize the volume of plastics being used as bag-containers of wet and dry products and ultimately contribute to the protection of our environment and lessen the hazard posed to one’s health.
SB member Nestor Israel, chair of the Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Environmental Protection and Development, said that if everyone joins and cooperate, “our dream of making San Jose de Buenavista a plastic free municipality will be a reality.”
As a gesture of support and commitment to the program, all partner stakeholders took part in the covenant signing. Operation “Purot Plastic” in the surroundings and in the tradetown market were undertaken by SJMPC officers, area coordinators and staff, Bulig Eskwela scholars, tricycle drivers and operators, market vendors, eco-aides and municipal government personnel.
