SP honors WNU founder
BACOLOD CITY -- The Sangguniang Panglungsod presided by Vice-Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson passed an ordinance Wednesday renaming Malaspina Street starting at the back of West Negros University (WNU) up to the junction of Sampaguita and Benigno S. Aquino Drive into Leodegario N. Agustin drive.
Councilor Alex Paglumotan, author of the ordinance who is also a product of WNU’s scholarship grants said it is his desire and that of Mayor Evelio Leonardia to recognize the late founder of West Negros University since its establishment in 1951 and its continued evolution to what it is today.
Agustin’s unparalleled contribution to the development of education in the city of Bacolod had benefited generations of professionals.
“It is a living proof of his worthy sacrifice to achieve greater sacrifice to achieve greater accomplishment of this only all-Bacoleño capitaled university,” Paglumotan said.
The ordinance is co-authored by Councilors Roberto Rojas, Greg Gasataya, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos, Celia Flor and Diosdado Valenzuela.
As part of the university’s history, it was in 1970s when Agustin provided the impetus, despite financial odds, to make West Negros College then an academic community of achievers. It continues to champion good value for quality education. Deserving students of meager means have gone through the portals of their Alma Mater to become successful in their chosen careers.
From its humble edifice at the Valentine Memorial Hall along Rosario and Juan streets to its present campus along Burgos Street occupying four hectares of property, West Negros University today is a symbol of resilience that has withstood trying times.
