NIA 6 bares status of irrigation repair, restoration
The National Irrigation Admiration (NIA) has released a status of its repair and restoration projects of irrigation systems in Western Visayas, which have an allocation of P1.65 billion.
NIA 6 Acting Regional Irrigation Manager Edilberto F. Lomigo said the projects are among the on-going Irrigation Development efforts as of March 15, 2009.
As per NIA records, the province of Aklan has an allocation of P41,727,056 with 509 hectares under rehabilitation and 696 hectares for restoration, noting a physical accomplishment of 37.65 percent.
For Antique, a total of P14,727.054 has been allocated, with 121 hectares under rehabilitation and 251 under restoration, With actual physical accomplishment of 87.17.
In Capiz only the town of Dumalag has been allocated with P5.672.466 for the rehabilitation of 12 hectares and 83 hectares for restoration, with 30 percent physical accomplishments.
Negros Occidental has an allocation of P19, 853.633 covering 79 hectares for rehabilitation and 344 hectares for rehabilitation, with 71.12 percent accomplishment.
Iloilo has an allocation of P24,019,790 for rehabilitation of 267 hectares and restoration of 427 hectares, with 79.14 physical accomplishment.
The report also showed a total of 31,046 jobs generated and a 60.01 percent accomplishment all over the region.
Meanwhile, the NIA 6 report also indicated the status of its special projects like the Bago River Irrigation System Rehabilitation Irrigation Project, which costs P1.869 billion from a JBIC-Loan agreement, covering a service area of 12,700 hectares and an expansion of 500 hectares.
This includes rehabilitation of the whole service area, strengthening of the Irrigation Development Project, Watershed Development and Watershed development and Improvement of Water Management.
Another special project is the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project (JRMP) Stage II that has an estimated cost of P10 billion, projected to be completed by 2015.
The project envisions the construction of a 145-meter high arch dam across Jalaur River in Central Panay Island to store water for year-round irrigation of 36,000 hectares rice land, power generation from an installed capacity of 20 MW, Municipal and Industrial water for Metro Iloilo, and Fishery Development.
When the project is completed, central towns in Iloilo will benefit from the expansion of the Iloilo water district service area.
Other proposed special projects include the Barotac Viejo Small reservoir Irrigation project covering a total potential irrigable area of about 2,141 hectares, which aims to impound water for irrigation, fresh water fish culture, to increase agricultural production and maintain ecological balance.
The Asue River Basin Agricultural Development Project includes several components like irrigation for 6,700 hectares of new areas covering the Province of Iloilo northern towns of Sara, ajuy, Concepcion, and San Dionisio; a mini-hydroelectric power generation augmentation of the water supply of Sara waterworks system, agricultural extension service, drainage improvement of water logged areas, O & M of farm to market roads, community social center, with multipurpose pavement for palay drying, trading, assembly and recreation.
