Police auxiliaries
The plan of the Iloilo City government to hire 100 police auxiliaries deserves close scrutiny. Kagawad Tong-tong is right a hearing to determine the scope of the functions of the police auxiliaries is needed to avert any problems in the future. The qualifications of those who will be hired should be defined well otherwise it would just be like the positions of traffic aides or anti-jaywalking agents which turn out to be a venue for political accomodations. We are well aware that admitted as traffic aides or anti-jaywalking agents are those close to the powers that be. Another thing is that the position of police auxiliaries could be very vulnerable to abuses so it is just proper that its functions and responsibilities should be limited. Gaabusar gani mga traffic aides kag barangay tanod ano pa gid ayhan kon may yara na police auxiliaries.
Regulate tarps
There is a need for the Sangguniang Panglungsod to pass an ordinance regulating the placement of streamers and tarpaulins in public plazas and other public places. It can be noticed that politicians, as well as those aspiring politicians, are now fond of placing streamers or tarpaulins with their faces on it in public plazas or just about anywhere with or without occasion. These practice destroys the beauty of our public plazas. It's also as if we're having the election all year round with those streamers and tarps, with politicians' faces, hanging everywhere. We hope somebody in the city council would consider our suggestion.
'Pass through' fees illegal
Owners of delivery trucks using the government's strong republic national highway have complained of the illegal collection of fees by some local government units. It's good that Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Ronaldo Puno has come out with a memorandum circular clearly stating that the collection of “pass through” fees on delivery trucks passing their area of jurisdiction is illegal or not covered by their taxing powers. Indeed, collection of fees on delivery trucks passing the national highways is no longer necessary since owners of motor vehicles are already paying the road users tax and delivery trucks are merely passing by the road which is being maintained by the national government not the LGU.
