Jonel Peraña had always been a very strict instructor for karatedo. Under his tutelage, students learn a lot of discipline. Despite his sense of humor, he manages to instill seriousness among his students during class.
He started representing the country in several karatedo events. In 1991, he won a bronze in the Sea Games held in Brunei, a silver and bronze in the 2001 Sea Games in Malaysia, gold in the 2001 Hongkong Invitational Asian Championship, bronze in the 2003 Sea Games in Vietnam, two bronzes during the 2004 Sea Games, a silver in the 2005 Italian Open and a gold in the Austria Invitational World Championship.

He is also the chairman of the Athletes Commission. In 2007, he became the coach of the Philippine team for karatedo. In 2008, he became the Vice President of the AFP/PNP Philippine Karatedo Federation, until the present.
Peraña holds the rank of PO3 and is assigned at the Molo Police Station under Senior Inspector de los Santos. He thanks Police Chief Superintendent for his support.
He is the organizer of the 22nd Philippine Karatedo Federation National Championships, which will be held on May 6 to 10 in Cabatuan.
Some 500 to 700 delegates from different parts of the country are expected to join.
The event will be a selection of those who will compete for the Seagames on December 2009.
Iloilo's delegates will come from the Iloilo Tinagan School of Martial Arts, Inc., Cabatuan, John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation Maritime University and the University of San Agustin.
He said that he decided to have the karatedo championships in Iloilo in order to promote interest for the said martial arts discipline. He admitted that interest for this has declined.
He hopes that instructors would unite so as not to discourage practitioners. He advised practitioners to train well.
