Barangay dads reminded on garbage burning ban
City Mayor Jerry Treñas is serious in implementing the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act as he again issued a memorandum to all the 180 city barangays banning the burning of garbage and indiscriminate throwing of wastes.
The memorandum order reminded the barangay captains to strictly impose the proper garbage disposal in their respective barangay.
In his order, Treñas reiterated to barangay leaders the provision of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which prohibits the burning of wastes and elimination of mini-dumpsites in the barangay.
“Your dedicated and determined effort to comply with the said law will not only make your barangay clean, green and healthy but will also boost our vision of making Iloilo City a vibrant and livable city by 2015,” said Treñas
In the same order, the chief executive directed all the barangay captains to prohibit all residents and commercial establishments in their respective areas of jurisdiction to put out their garbage after collection period. The wastes should be piled up on-time for pick up of garbage trucks.
Last Monday’s memorandum order on proper waste management was the second memorandum issued by Treñas in two weeks time. He also issued an order to barangay captains in the mandatory solid waste diversion and segregation and establishment of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in every barangay or cluster of barangays.
The recycling and composting is highly recommended by the city government to reduce the mounting garbage disposed at the Calajunan dumpsite in Mandurriao. The establishment of MRFs in every barangay will reduce the tons of garbage transported daily to the dumpsite.
The city’s initiatives on proper waste management which calls for all government units in reaching their 50 percent reduction of solid waste target within the six-month period starting January 2009 is in line with the campaign of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
