Iloilo City to host nat’l Soroptimist event
The city of Iloilo is hosting the 22ndMid-Biennial Conference of the Soroptimist International of the Philippines Region Inc. on May 8 and 9, 2009.
Soroptimist International that has General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council is a voluntary service organization chosen by business and professional women committed to improving the lives of women and girls.
Hosting the Conference at Sarabia Manor Hotel with participants coming from all over the Philippines is Soroptimist International of Iloilo (SIA) under President Jane Frances C. Jarantilla.
SIA-Iloilo was chartered on June 15, 1979, initially with 35 charter members. It has been in existence for 30 years.
Its six programs are: economic and social development, education, environment, health, human rights/status of women, international goodwill and understanding.
The three speakers at the conference are Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio, Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Filipino of the year for 2007; Dr. Bernadette J. Madrid, one of Five Most Outstanding Philippine Doctors for 2005; and Dr. Josette Biyo, the first Filipina and first Asian to win the Intel Excellence Teaching Award in 2002 and has a minor planet named after her.
