DepEd 6 incorporates H1N1 in classes
The Department of Education, Region VI has allotted the first week of the opening of classes in educating elementary pupils and students on the prevention of the spread of H1N1 virus.
This was disclosed by Director Mildred Garay of DepEd 6 in a PIA interview,stressing that they give focus to the DepEd-DOH Influenza A (H1N1) Response Level System in Schools.
Garay said that the students were taught to practice regular hand hygiene, and cough etiquette.
The other simple everyday measures each student can practice to avoid infection and control the transmission of the virus include: wearing of masks and other protective equipment, cleaning and disinfection of the environment;when not necessary,avoid crowds especially in enclosed venues; enough sleep and healthy diet.
On hand washing,Director Garay said that all schools have hand washing and sanitation facilities,noting that in remote areas, the sources of water come from deep wells but school officials were instructed to make soap available to the children/students.
Garay said that Western Visayas has 3,882 public elementary schools and 603 secondary schools.
On student population,she said that they are expecting an increase in enrollment both in elementary and secondary schools this school year.
She also said that they will try to procure instructional materials like text books and work books in order to help improve the level of education in Western Visayas.(PIA6/T.Villavert)
