Dengue cases in W.Visayas still rising
Dengue cases in Western Visayas continuously increased based on the latest monitoring of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Health (DOH). The latest dengue cases posted to 1,675 with 26 deaths. Iloilo City still has the most number of cases with 517 cases with 16 deaths or a total of 533 cases.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the city government has given much attention to the rising cases of dengue fever in the city. He is most particular with the situation in different public schools in the city. The city can initiate fogging operations in the schools upon the request of the principal. Fogging will only be initiated when there is no class to protect the students from the danger the fogging activities might cause to the students. A group of Koreans wants to assist the city government in conducting fogging operations.
The chief executive added that he is also in constant communication with punong barangays for the continuous clean up activities particularly in dengue stricken barangays. There are already eight barangays in the city stricken by dengue. The barangays highly affected by dengue are: Barangays Sto. Nino Sur, Sta Cruz and Sooc in Arevalo; Barangays Bito-on, Cubay and Tabuc Suba in Jaro; Veterans Village in City Proper and San Juan in Molo.
The dengue cases recorded in the entire region varies from dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Of the 1,675 cases, there are 661 cases of dengue fever; dengue hemorrhagic fever 985 and dengue shock syndrome with 29 cases. The record on the number of dengue cases was sourced out by the health department in 29 sentinel sites. It covers from the period of January 1 to July 18,2009.
The current DOH-6 report also registered new death for the province of Guimaras and additional fatality for Iloilo province. Guimaras has 39 cases and one death or 40 cases and Iloilo with 388 cases with six deaths or 394 cases. In the January to July 11 monitoring, Guimaras has only 33 cases and zero deaths and Iloilo province has 333 cases with five deaths or 388 cases.
In the same report, Bacolod City has 346 cases with zero deaths; Negros Occidental 205 cases with two deaths; Capiz 92 cases with one death; Aklan with 53 cases with zero death and Antique nine cases with zero death.
