City Council condoles with Aquino family
The Sangguniang Panglungsod of Iloilo City yesterday passed a resolution expressing its deepest and sincere condolences to the bereaved families of former President Corazon Aquino.
The resolution unanimously approved by the city council was sponsored by Councilor Eldrid Antiquiera. In his resolution, Antiquiera likened the death of the former president to losing a special friend, special mother and religious leader.
A copy of the resolution will be personally handed by Vice Mayor Jed Mabilog to Senator Noynoy Aquino. Mabilog is attending today’s funeral of former President Aquino.
She will be buried beside her husband at the Manila Memorial Park. Earlier, Mayor Jerry Treñas also sent a letter to the Aquino family for the demise of the president.
He said Aquino is an icon of democracy and a symbol of people’s fight against oppressive regime. “Cory became an accidental hero and an icon of Philippine democracy.” She has freed the people from the bondage of an oppressive regime, said Antiquiera.
Aquino was considered as a “democratic icon” after she toppled the late President Ferdinand Marcos. Her presidency was punctuated by seven coup attempts most staged by the same clique of officers who had risen up against the dictator.
The councilor said he has fond memories of the former president who died after her bout with colon cancer. “I am one of those who organized a Cory Aquino movement. She is so humble and unassuming,” Antiquiera said.
Antiquiera said Aquino is a plain housewife that led the country into democracy. She is a great loss to the Filipino people and her aspirations should not die in vain, he added.
The former president became politically active after her husband Benigno (Ninoy) was assassinated on the tarmac of the Manila airport now Ninoy Aquino International Airport in 1983.
