IFCP mitigates heavy flooding in Iloilo City
Ilonggos will soon have a sigh of relief from perennial flooding once the multi-billion Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP) is completed by yearend, Mayor Jerry Treñas said.
The recent flooding brought by Tropical Storm Jolina within the influence area of the project was mitigated due to the completion of the 2.9-kilometer reinforced concrete Type-U channel improvement along the Ticud-Ingore Creek in La Paz district.
The Upper Ingore Creek is now functioning as the main drainage channel to serve the areas of Banuyao, Balabago, Cubay, Tabuc Suba, Quintin Salas, Hechanova, San Isidro and Tacas in Jaro and La Paz districts.
The Upper Ingore Creek is one of the components of the now substantially-completed Contract Package 2 which also includes the improvement of Jaro River Mouth and Iloilo River..
Likewise, the ongoing Contract Package 1 includes the construction of Jaro Floodway and improvement of Tigum and Aganan River system.
Expected to be completed by the end of the year, the 5-kilometer new Jaro Floodway will serve the flood control for the next rainy season of 2010 to protect the urban areas specifically Jaro and La Paz districts.
Package 2 is being implemented by contractor China International Water and Electric Corp. while Package 1 is being undertaken by Korea-based Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co.
No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast track the IFCP’s completion by December this year. (PIO)
