City to intensify ‘no segregation, no collection’ policy
Iloilo City government will intensify the implementation of “no segregation, no collection” policy on garbage starting next month.
Department of Public Services (DPS) chief Engr. Raul Gallo said garbage trucks will only collect wastes that are segregated and placed in designated pick up points.
Gallo said the policy is in compliance of Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.
Gallo thereby appealed to the city residents to observe the waste segregation policy of the city government.
Gallo said there would be color coding for the waste segregation. Biodegradable wastes must be placed in green plastic bags or bags tied with green string. The color serves as indicator for those collecting the garbage.
The non-biodegradable wastes such as diapers, plastics and aluminum foils must be placed in yellow plastic bags or plastic bags tied with yellow string.
Gallo said the garbage truck will also pick up wastes placed on the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Garbage dumped in the MRF facilities are already segregated.
It was learned that not all barangays in the city have MRF due to lack of space where it could be established.
Gallo stressed that the garbage truck will not pick up waste in containers or plastic bags which are unsegregated.
