90% of UNA mayors back Marañon for governor
BACOLOD CITY — Association of Chief Executives (ACE) President Mayor Manolet Escalante of Manapla confirmed reports that the standard bearer of United Negros Alliance (UNA) for 2010 elections is no less than Sagay City Mayor Freddie Marañon.
Escalante said more than 90% of UNA members already declared their full support to Marañon which includes city and municipal mayors as well as congressmen.
The ACE President said Mayor Marañon is quiet different in terms of personality to his brother the late Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon, but in terms of leadership and the way he runs his office Mayor Marañon has proven it already.
Escalante stressed the improvement of Sagay City when it comes to economic growth and food security programs.
He also defended Marañon to some negative criticisms particularly on health issues.
“I know that Marañon is physically fit and can handle the leadership of the province once elected by the people,” Escalante said.
When asked about their bet for vice-governor, Escalante said their group will convene on mid-October to discuss these things and to finalize their slate.
Reports revealed that choices to become Marañon’s running made include: Mayor Bong Lacson of San Carlos City, Mayor Pedro Zayco of Kabanklan City and Escalante himself.
Meanwhile, Escalante also felt sad after Governor Isidro Zayco declared that he no longer has the intention to seek gubernatorial post in 2010.
Nevertheless, he congratulated Zayco for a job well done and as UNA member he said he respects the governor’s decision.
Escalante also stressed the achievements of Zayco especially in his town.
