DTI-Iloilo slates activities for Consumer Welfare Month
Presidential Proclamation No. 1098 declaring the month of October of every year as Consumer Welfare Month has been observed since 1997 with the joint efforts of government agencies, such as the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, National Food Authority, Department of Health, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the business sector led by the Philippine Retailers Association – Iloilo Chapter. This year’s theme is “Generic Drugs: Gawang Pinoy! Galing Pinoy! Tangilikin Natin”, with the Department of Health as the lead implementing agency.
In support to this year’s celebration, the DTI Iloilo Provincial Office will be organizing two (2) major activities: 1) Consumer Welfare Roadshow on October 22, 2009, 8:00 am – 3 pm, at the DTI Audio Visual Room, 3rd Floor, DTI-Regional Office 6 Building, corner J.M. Basa/Peralta Sts., Iloilo City; and 2) Diskwento Sale Program on October 29-30, 2009, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, at the New Iloilo Capitol Grounds.
Consumer Welfare Roadshow is a joint activity of the DTI, Department of Health and the Philippine Product Safety and Quality Foundation, Inc. (PPSQFI). The DTI has invited speakers to talk on issues that are important to consumers such as: Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, Cheaper Medicine Act /Maximum Drug Retail Price Program and Product Standards on LPG, electrical products, Christmas lights, steel bars, plywood and other mandatory products.
Meanwhile, the Diskwento Sale Program is a government-organized flea market where producers/manufacturers and retailers shall sell basic necessities and prime commodities, over-the-counter medicines and healthcare products, agricultural products including rice at discounted rates to help ease the burden on low – income workers. Discount sale ranges from 10 to 50% on almost all products on sale. The program is conducted in coordination with the Iloilo City Local Price Coordinating Council led by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, PRA–Iloilo Chapter and Integrated Salesmen Association of Panay.
