CLUP to address environmental issues in Boracay Island
The adoption of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) which the Department of Tourism (DOT) has prepared with the help of various stakeholders in the island is a key to addressing several environmental issues in Boracay Island.
This was the opinion of DOT regional director Edwin Trompeta after the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)-Boracay expressed alarm over the continuing beach erosion in the island.
Trompeta said the beach erosion is “caused by man himself.”
He cited several illegal constructions in the island that impede the flow of water.
“The CLUP has already been approved and we have a draft ordinance which they have to adopt. But I understand they are still revising the draft ordinance to maybe suit the interest of other people there,” he said.
Trompeta said he would still look into the ordinance that will be approved.
He stressed that the CLUP coupled with a more effective ordinance can help address environmental concerns in the island because “there will be more control in the development of Boracay especially along the beach front.”
“There will also be more control of developments in the island. At the moment there is no control,” he said. (PNA)
