Youth involvement in Climate Change to highlight 4th SWM summit
The 4th Solid Waste Management (SWM) Summit slated November 18-20, 2009 in Iloilo City will be rallying the involvement of young people in advocating for education and action on Climate Change.
Regional Ecology Center (REC) 6 coordinator Collete Juntarciego said the Summit will give the first day for activities involving schools and communities to step up implementation of environmental education and presenting showcases of initiatives.
This is the first time that the SWM Summit will specifically involve young people through various creative activities, like Poem Writing contest, Composo contest, Recycling contest and Poster Making contest.
The Committee on Youth activities has identified three levels of the contests, namely, for the Elementary, there will be the Recycling Arts contest and the Poem writing contest.
For the Secondary, there is the Composo and the Recycling Arts contests, and for the Tertiary, there is the Poster making and the Recycling Arts contests.
The entries for the various contests will revolve on the Summit’s theme: “Environmental Education: Our Challenge to Act on Climate Change.”
The contest committee chairpersons said the names of participants for every event should be submitted on or before October 28, at the SWM Section, 2nd floor EMB Laboratory Building, DENR FMS-6 compound in Parola, Iloilo City.
Entries for the Composo must be in CDs, and entries for Poem Writing must be submitted to the same address on or before November 10 by the composers and authors, who will at the same time get a briefing from contest organizers.
The contest proper for all events will be on November 18 at the Robinson’s Place, Iloilo City.
Juntarciego said the IEC materials which will be produced will become part of the REC 6 education and advocacy resources.
DENR 6 director Oscar Cabanayan said the SWM Summit is a big initiative in advocating for the effective implementation of Republic Act 9003, which also involves the local government units, business and civic groups.
It can be recalled that in many of her Friday sessions with LGUs, she has underscored the need for Solid Waste Management projects to combat adverse effects of Climate Change. (PIA6/ESS)
