Chinoy wins 2nd runner-up in Macau fireworks contest
A Chinese-Filipino businessman in Iloilo City bagged the second runner-up in the 21st Macau International Fireworks Display Contest at a ceremony held at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Center October 1.
Jess Sio, owner of Scorpion Fireworks, won US$2,500 as third placer awarded to the Platinum Fireworks, Inc. as the Philippines’ official entry to the global pyrotechnics show.
The Iloilo City Government recognized Sio’s achievement during Monday’s flag raising ceremony as Mayor Jerry Treñas handed him a citation award.
“It only shows that Ilonggos can excel even in the international scene. This is a manifestation that we are proud of them,” Treñas stressed.
It was the fourth time that Sio’s Platinum Fireworks competed in the pyrotechnics spectacle alongside the veterans from Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
This year’s contest featured ten teams from the Philippines, Spain, Korea, Taiwan, France, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Austria and China.
Meanwhile, Tamaya Kitahara Fireworks Co., Ltd. from Japan netted the top prize of US$8,000 while Italy’s La Tirrena S.A.S. Fireworks took second prize of US$4,000.
The participating team complemented their display with music ranging from classical or folk music to contemporary music, coupled with special themes and features to enthrall the audience.
Crowds of residents and visitors enjoyed the fireworks at various spots of Macau and Taipa, adding festive and joyful atmosphere to the city. The annual glamorous fireworks displays have become a signature event that brings splendid experience to the public and visitors in Macau.
Organized by Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO), the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest received wide accolades and recognitions over the past two decades.
To add festive atmosphere to the fireworks display contest, MGTO and the General Union of Neighbors Association of Macau jointly presented the Fireworks Carnival on the shorefront beside the Macau Tower on each of the fireworks display nights, offering an array of live entertainment, cultural activities and culinary delights.
