Public info officers ink deed to save the environment
ROXAS CITY – With Malacañang’s call for the government and the people to work hand in hand to address climate change, the public information officers in Capiz have declared their support in the campaign on climate change.
During the monthly meeting of the Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers (CAGPIO) held here last October 21, the signing of the document that spells out their support in the campaign to help mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change was led by its president, Engineer Julius Abela from the Department of Public Works and Highways.
The CAGPIO members said that climate change is already the biggest and most threatening environmental issue that is already adversely affecting the people throughout the world.
They said that “immediate solutions to mitigate the catastrophic effects of climate change must be done now.”
According to them, being aware of their role and responsibilities as channel of information and having the capacity to mobilize people to take action, they pledge themselves by helping in the conduct of advocacy campaign.
They also commit to work for common measures to protect the environment to ensure the safety and well-being of all Capiceños and the people of the world.
In preparation of the advocacy campaign of the information officers of Capiz, a communication planning workshop is being lined up early next month.
On the other hand, Provincial Administrator Zoe Herrera said that the provincial government of Capiz led by Governor Victor Tanco is also pledging its full support for said communication effort.
Herrera also lauded said initiative of information officers to help reach many Capiceños for them to take their respective action in mitigating the effects of climate change.
The communication activity of the information officers here will also be anchored on the recently signed Republic Act No. 9729 or the Philippine Climate Change Act of 2009 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Under said law, the National Framework Strategy and Program on Climate Change will be established that will focus on mitigation and adaptation—the two instruments to battle climate change—from the highest levels of government down to more than 42,000 barangays. (PIA/Jemin B. Guillermo)
