Roxas City’s programs for children net P106M
Roxas City – The Roxas City government is set to launch its 5-year Local Development Plan for Children next month.
City Councilor Carla Abela, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Children, Women and Family, said that they will hold a book launching of the city’s LDPC before the end of November this year.
Abela said that the Roxas City’s LDPC is a five-year program which is for 2008 to 2012.
She revealed that the total investment of the Roxas City government for children’s programs for said period reached more than P106.024 million covering the survival, development, protection and participation rights.
Of the total amount, the children’s programs on development has an approved budget of more than P82.02 million while the programs on protection has more than P13.39 million budget.
On the other hand, the programs on survival and participation have an approved budget of more than P7.65 million and more than P2.94 million, respectively.
Abela added that the city’s LDPC will be a framework to guide program implmentors down to the barangay level especially on programs and services for the welfare of children.
She said that during the book launching, barangay officials from the city’s 47 barangays will be oriented on the contents of said LDPC.
Abela also said that while the city government here has already its own Children’s Code, there is a need to revisit said Code and take necessary steps to harmonize with the LDPC.
Abela also urged other government and non-government as well as private institutions to work for the welfare of children based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
During the recent 15th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, a Commission on Rights of Women and Children will be set up next year by the 10-member-states as part of the ASEAN’s commitment to human rights.
The work of the soon-to-be established Commission will be in line with the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which all ASEAN member-states adhere to. (PIA/Jemin B. Guillermo)
